earth hour 2009
we did earth hour again this year.
from 8:30 - 9:30 pm
on the evening of march 28,
we turned off our lights
to urge world leaders to address global warming issues.
last year we went on a neighborhood walk in our atlanta neighborhood,
but this march, in kayseri, it had just snowed in the morning,
and a night-walk would’ve too cold.
this year, we got started a few minutes late.
we were eating a late dinner
of fried chicken, french fries and salad.
i took an old, glass peanut butter jar,
filled it fine-grain bulgur,
stuck some birthday candles in it
and turned out the lights.

i think the girls felt it was a special occasion to eat dinner by
birthday candle-light.
aya kept singing, “happy birthday to me.”
the girls could barely resist blowing out the candles.
after dinner we took the candles in the living room,
talked a bit how to conserve energy and water
by turning of the lights when we’re not in the room,
turning off the water when we’re brushing our teeth,
and the like.
we sang “the green grass grew all around“,
and then took turns telling more-funny-than-scary, scary stories.
then it was time for bed
and we turned out the lights for the night.
