College Recognizes Observance of Ramadan

Last week, Spelman faculty, staff and students of the Muslim faith began observance of Ramadan, a time of reflection and contemplation for Muslims. During this period of spiritual renewal to express gratitude for God’s guidance and to atone for past sins, Muslims fast by abstaining from food and drink from dawn to sunset.

Spelman College Dining Services will offer special meals to accommodate students who are observing the month of Ramadan. Fresh dates and other fruit will also be provided for students who wish to break their fast. Additionally, the Interfaith prayer room, located in the WISDOM Center, will be available between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. for students, faculty and staff who want quiet space to reflect, contemplate and pray.

Held the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, Ramadan marks the period during which the Qur’an, the central religious text of Islam, was first revealed to the prophet Muhammad.

the first lines of the spelman song ring in my ears:
spelman thy name we praise
standards and honor raise…
