sanaa’s serenade

sanaa doesn’t
“watch tv”
but she does watch tv programs on the internet
at noggin.com
and nickjr.com.

there’s a particular song
from lazytown
that has caught her fancy.
she takes to singing it everywhere now.

we were on the bus on the way to
swim class.
she was singing the song
and saw a young girl
staring at her.
to sanaa that means an audience.
she turned around to that girl
and serenaded her with all the energy
and emotion she could muster while sitting in a bus seat.

replace all the puppets in this video
with one energetic, slim, brown, 5 year old
who is a natural mimic
and you’ll have a taste of the performance
sanaa gave
to this girl on the bus.

after a forceful finishing note of “CAKE!”
sanaa waited for a response.
the girl gave none.
i guess she was stunned.

after a few seconds of smiling
her post-performance smile, sanaa said,
“why are you staring at me?”

i just leaned over and kissed her head.
