mozell benson, master quilter
she’s my 70-something year old grandmother
and she’s a master quilter.
she’s been all over the states and even overseas
demonstrating, talking about the — as some call it –
folk art of quilting.
for example, she is a recipient of an award from the national endowment for the arts.

flashback:
at night grandma would quickly fall asleep on the couch
in front of the tv after all day out in the field and running errands.
the grandkids would grab a cushion off one of the other couches
and a quilt (sometimes we’d have to share)
and curl up like little puppies on the floor in between the heater (if it was winter)
grandma and the tv.
those were the days.

and i’m not going to even talk about
how we used to have to call out who was going next in the tub
before bed cause grandma only heated up one bucket of water for the tub.
if you happened to have to go last
you got lukewarm, gritty bathwater.
ahh, memories.

somehow
– i don’t know all the details of the story –
some folks who love her work
found money to rebuild her house in the country (waverly)
along with a studio!
what!
the architecture students at auburn university listened to her talk about quilting
and what she’s like in a house and studio
and each student then came up with models and drawings.
my grandma mozell has to choose.
what an honor and a blessing.
