go fly a kite

the girls and i went to the
smithsonian kite festival on the mall this past saturday.
colorful kite
sanaa immediately wanted to fly a kite
and rahmah was so excited that she was pointing and “talking” about every kite she saw.
it looked like so much fun.

— later we ended up trying to fly some kites sister katrina let us borrow.
we ended up doing a lot of running.
we need a windier day. –

sanaa had seen the mall bucket drummers on the way
so we went back to try and dance with them,
but they were busy counting their money.
i don’t think they did too bad that day.
there were a lot of folks on the mall.
i found out later that the cherry blossom festival also began that day.

– i love this city.
there is always something wonderful going on. –

we did pass a street trumpeter.
i had sanaa give him a nickel
and he transitioned from whatever he’d been playing into sesame street for her.
we went into the reagan building
for the first time
to get to a clean bathroom and visit the food court.
you had to show ID to get in!
sanaa chose chinese fried rice, of all foods.
of course she only ate 5 spoonfulls and declared herself full.
she then proceeded to push in every chair in a quarter-mile radius of where we sat.
we has some gelatissimo, too — i guess that’s how you spell it.
sanaa and i couldn’t agree on a flavor
– they had mango, banana, pistachio, coffee, coconut and more
featuring an actual mango, banana, pistachios, coffee beans, coconut and more
on each pile of gelatissimo –
so we got vanilla.
it was the richest vanilla ice cream i’ve ever tasted.
between the three of us, it took a bit of work to eat one $3.00 scoop.
it was worth every dollar, though.
