three-oh

i just turned 30.
it’s really not a big deal
and i’d only need to commemorate if it meant something
beyond what it is:
another birthday.
another year gone past.
what have you done?
how have you changed for the better?

i didn’t do much on the actual day
except
take my daughter to the pediatrician
(didn’t have trouble remembering the date for forms this time)
and buy myself a small yellow cake with thick white icing
with a candle that said:
“30 — 18 with 12 years of experience”.
ishaq had to work that night
so he and sanaa sang a quick happy birthday and felice compleanos.

i had to remind ishaq that he hadn’t wished me a happy birthday yet
and half the day had passed.

so, i had MY day the following thursday.
ishaq got up with the girls got up — instead of me.
i took a shower
(i was singing in the shower)
took he and the girls to the library for story time
and went on my way.
i went to the sauma exhibit at the finnish embassy
– i guess brown folks don’t visit finland
cause there was NADA in the travel brochure –
i went to chick-fil-a,
painted a small dish at color me mine,
i picked up my mom from the airport
and came home preparing to go out again to
dance class with lesina.
turns out there was no class,
but i still hand a wonderful, relaxing day.

i think i may make it an institution.
i think i should get one of those a month.
it can be something i can look forward to
and help me keep my sanity
as i wage this jihad in my home:
bein’ a wife and raisin’ my children
