what are YOU gonna do?

i had kind of a heated conversation with ishaq yesterday
he was sharing what he’d learned during an after-maghrib class
the topic was what is obligatory vice what is sunnah while making salat
it was some good info
and i’m glad he shared it with me
but i took advantage of it,
leading it directly where i wanted it to go with:
“where any sisters there?”
he didn’t know because,
of course,
the sisters were upstair in
what i like to call
“the attic”

i continued:
“did he [the instructor/sheik] do demonstrations?”
he replied that the speaker had done a few
i pounced:
“if a sister had been there
don’t you think it would have been more beneficial
if had been able to SEE the demonstration?”
his rolling eyes and body language told me enough:
“here we go again”

well, i got a little loud

i’ve got to remember that
honey gets more bees than vinegar

at the end of it all
he suggested that i talk with
the imam via his wife
in order to get my complaints/concerns heard

as i continued to think on it
i also think i need to do MY part
instead of just complaining

what am I doing to
change how i feel at a masjid?
am i fostering sisterhood by
speaking and introducing myself to other sisters
instead of just makeing salat and running out to meet my husband?
what am I doing for sisters?
am i starting a sister’s day at that particular masjid
that i think is lacking in sisterhood?
do other sisters even feel that same way i do?
i don’t know cause,
shamefully,
i don’t even speak to most of then

so, i think i’m going to start with my own first suggestion:
speaking and introducing myself to sisters

then i’ll do a informal, friendly poll to see how other sisters feel

i was thinking of doing something i’m initially calling
“i am your sister”
i’m picturing a headshot of a hijab-covered, smiling sister
with tidbits about her to the left like
her name,
her talents,
her hobbies,
her family,
and etc.
every week a new sister would have the spotlight

but how do i do that among the sisters
and just amoung the sisters
especially for the typ of sisters who wear veils?
maybe i’ll start with the more open ones first?
i don’t know…
