women friendly mosques: a poem?

in sharing the publication with some sisters via email
i wrote some extra text that i like

it might be a poem

maybe i can get that ability back…

i’m in dc
and don’t have the luxury of
all that is atlanta masjid

man, i miss it
there is always something going on
and that something is GOOD
for the individual and communal growth of all
jumuah is a DAY
not an hour to two-and-a-half hour jumuah –
depending on who’s giving the khutba
and the mingling, salaam-ing, quick catch-up talk that happens afterwards

but it ain’t like that everywhere

sometimes sisters have to go up the back steps
past the kitchen
to a jumuah khutba through a loud-speaker
that squeals with feedback
to a jumuah khutba through a rickety black and white tv
that keeps flittin in and out
or to a jumuah khutba in the rec room
trying to listen above the din
of sisters’ talking
and children wailing/playing/yelling
OR just not go to jumuah
